AWAKENING THE
HEART OF THE WOMB
A Sacred Return to Mayan Wisdom for Modern Women
Deep in the heart of Guatemala, where ancient wisdom still thrives and traditional healers hold sacred space, we invite you to embark on a transformative journey of remembering. This intimate retreat brings together modern women with Mayan elders and comadronas (traditional midwives) for a profound exploration of traditional womb wisdom and healing practices passed down through generations.

For centuries, these medicine women have carried the sacred knowledge of women's healing arts, preserving practices that honor the womb as a center of wisdom, creativity, and power. Through their guidance, you'll experience traditional ceremonies, healing treatments, and ancient wisdom teachings that speak directly to the modern woman's journey. This is more than a retreat - it's an invitation to reconnect with time-honored ways of knowing and healing, bringing these sacred practices into your own life and modern world.
The wisdom of the womb extends far beyond its physical nature - it is our creative center, our inner compass, and our connection to the deepest mysteries of life. Through traditional Mayan healing practices, we learn to listen to this wisdom, to clear ancestral patterns, and to restore the sacred relationship with our feminine center. Whether you're seeking physical healing, emotional release, or a deeper connection to your own inner knowing, these ancient practices offer a pathway to wholeness that has supported women through the ages.

This sacred journey welcomes all women, whether you're taking your first steps into womb wisdom or have been walking this path for years. We especially call to those seeking to heal and transform their relationship with their feminine center - women experiencing physical challenges like endometriosis, PCOS, irregular cycles, or fertility journeys; those carrying trauma or loss; and those who simply feel the pull to deeper embodiment and knowing. Even if you no longer have a physical womb, these practices offer profound healing and reconnection with your feminine wisdom. About Mariu

Maria Eugenia Gobbato, or Mariu, born and raised in Guatemala, is a dedicated mother to three gorgeous humans, a well recommended midwife, a renowned massage therapist, seeked healer and an experienced teacher. She is passionate about sharing the gifts she has received in this life with others who cross paths with her. Teaching, healing, and working from personally embodied experiencial wisdom that is palpabable in her presence. She grew up in Quetzaltenango and moved to San Marcos La Laguna, Lake Atitlan, in the year 2010. After birthing her first two children in a beautiful birthing home in the mountains of Catalunya, Spain. This experience marked the trajectory of her life. Through birthing and becoming a mother, she discovered the loud and deep calling to be a midwife to support other women during their birth and create safe, respectful and dignified spaces for women to birth in. She started a deep self healing journey and discovered the innate wisdom of our bodies and their natural capacity to heal. This lead her to study Reflexology, and then several other healing modalities such as Maya abdominal massage, sports and deep tissue massage, swedish massage and acupressure, chi nei tsang, neuro muscular & neurolymphatic massage, tei shin therapy (needless acupuncture), reiki, energy medicine, and plant medicine. Mariu has also been apprenticing and working with local Maya midwives, herbalists, healers and ajq'ij for the past 13 years. During this time she has learned and integrated Ancestral Maya Medicine. As it used to be an integral part of community life. With the midwives being the carriers of this wisdom and respected leaders in their community. They were the counselors, wise women, village doctors and highly revered authority figures in their governance system. Mariu has had the honor of learning from many elder midwives in different parts of Guatemala. She trained in a midwifery school in Quetzaltenango, CODECOT, founded by indigenous midwives for indigenous midwives, and has been attending births in her community for the past 6 years. After years of working with the midwives on a personal level, Mariu founded The Midwife Project. A community based midwifery association that supports indigenous midwives by creating spaces where midwives can feel empowered, reconnecting to their roots and feeling resourced to be able to give high quality, evidence based and culturally appropriate health care to the women they attend in their communities. www.midwifeproject.net With this wealth of wisdom and experience, Mariu's offerings become a rich vibrational field of knowledge and lived embodied experiences. Where time slows down, and we feel more. We become more aware of our body and our surroundings. Our oneness and uniqueness. A space where deep healing and trasformation cristalize into our being. As we tap into our womb, the source of our inherent power to bring forth life. The source of our creative life force energy. Concepts that are basic and normal to Maya midwifery and Maya medicine. The womb is deeply and lovingly tended to.
Throughout our time together, you'll also have the honor of working with respected local comadronas and elders who have carried these healing traditions through generations. These wisdom keepers will share their knowledge of traditional practices, plant medicine, and ceremonial ways, offering authentic transmission of their ancestral wisdom.

SACRED LAND: LAKE ATITLAN & SAN MARCOS
Lake Atitlan, known as "Atit" (Grandmother) in Mayan Tz'utujil, is one of the most energetically powerful places on Earth. According to Mayan cosmology, this sacred body of water represents the womb of the world, a place where heaven and earth meet. Formed in the belly of an ancient volcano and surrounded by three majestic peaks - Volcan San Pedro, Volcan Atitlan, and Volcan Toliman - these waters have been a spiritual epicenter for countless generations.
The Maya believe that Lake Atitlan holds special spiritual properties that facilitate healing, transformation, and direct connection with ancestral wisdom. The lake's unique energy field is said to be amplified by the volcanic rocks that line its depths and the powerful convergence of geological fault lines beneath its surface. This creates what many describe as a natural energy vortex, making it an ideal location for deep spiritual work and healing.
Ancient prophecies speak of Lake Atitlan as a gathering place for those seeking to remember their connection to the sacred. The three volcanoes are considered spiritual guardians, each holding specific medicine and teachings:
-
Toliman: represents the masculine principle and ancient wisdom
-
Atitlan: embodies the feminine principle and healing powers
-
San Pedro: symbolizes the integration of spiritual and material worlds
San Marcos la Laguna, our home for this journey, is a unique and magical village where traditional Mayan culture harmoniously blends with a global healing community. Nestled between the lake and mountains, this peaceful haven is known for:
-
Its powerful spiritual energy and sacred sites
-
Traditional Mayan ceremonies and healing practices
-
Lush tropical gardens and nature paths
-
Local markets featuring indigenous crafts and textiles
-
A strong community of traditional healers and wisdom keepers
-
Easy access to the lake's healing waters
-
Rich Mayan culture and traditions
Here, in this profound energy vortex where mountain meets sky and heaven touches earth, where hummingbirds dance through tropical flowers and copal smoke rises to the heavens, you're invited to sink deeply into your own sacred knowing. The ancient whispers of the lake, the steady presence of the volcanoes, and the healing embrace of the land create the perfect container for reconnecting with your womb wisdom.
Like the lake itself - deep, mysterious, and life-giving - your womb holds ancient memories and infinite potential. In this sacred place, where ceremonies have been performed for millennia and healing wisdom flows as naturally as the waters, you'll be supported in awakening to the deep knowing that lives in your own body. Here, between volcano and shore, heaven and earth, you'll remember what your ancestors always knew: that the path to your power flows through the heart of your womb.
